Boxy Stars in Fairbanks, AK!

Fabulous day in Fairbanks, AK!

I met up with the Cabin Fever Quilters yesterday for a full day Boxy Stars workshop –a whole day of playing in the 2.5” strips and turning out some fast and fabulous scrappy blocks!

The fabrics were varied, each quilter bringing fabrics from their own stash, sharing, swapping, stitching, laughing, talking --

It was so much fun!

I have to tell you that I never expected Fairbanks to be this hot in May.  High 80s closing in on 90!  Hot hot hot, and wow, after nearly freezing just last Sunday on our Fjords trip out of Seward, this was just bizarre.  But that’s how things are in Fairbanks.  If you don’t like the temperature, just hang around.  It will go from 40 below in the winter, to 100 above in the summer….

The blocks were great, no matter the theme!

These two sets were coming from Jelly Rolls, one Christmas, and one floral!

Note when sewing with Jelly Rolls…they are unpredictable.  Most often they don’t have enough neutral to do the job I need them to do, so be prepared to throw in extra fabric to work with if you are working from a Jelly Roll.  Use it as your palette or theme starter, but go to your stash and pull in things that can go with it and spread that variety around a bit….especially in the background department.

A 1930s theme is a winner!

Sew More Blocks!

This was a fast and fun day with blocks coming together quickly in all of their variety.  You can find the free pattern for Boxy Stars under the Free Patterns tab at the top of the blog.  And you will get a gazillion bonus triangles from this  quilt too!  We counted how many in my demo quilt – something like 280?  That’s a TON for another project!

A completely fun and fabulous day!

And today we get to do it all over again with Cathedral Stars!

Flying home tonight….I am so ready to be home!  It’s been an awesome trip, spending time all over the great state of Alaska.  I hope to come back again in the future – but right now my feet are ready to be back on NC soil and stay put for a while!

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend, everyone!

  4. I have enjoyed following along with your alaska trip. My daughter Jill lives in fairbanks and I encouraged her to go to your lecture. She did and she enjoyed it. My other daughter and I are taking your class at vermont quilt festival. Look forward to seeing you there. Have a safe journey home. Maureen mullen
