Quilt-Cam 4/23/2014

Studio_April2014 106
It’s Quilt-Cam Night!

And I’m really excited.  I’ve been plugging on these string blocks for the borders of my cheddar sampler for what seems like months now.

Truth be told, I haven’t been able to work on them at ALL in between our last Quilt-Cam and tonight….there has been too much else on my plate, so I am eager to finish the last 22 blocks – Yep! 22 more!  That’s what I’ve figured I’ll need to go all the way around the border of this quilt.

I love doing these – they are perfect for using up the smallest scraps.  As you can tell here, I am sewing with all the strips and strings left from taking men’s shirts and other articles of clothing apart.

Every bit counts!

Tonight since the Supernova Ultra was still set up from piecing a batting this morning, I decided to keep her going to give her a better work out.

When I do string piecing like this, I like to keep an ironing station right at hand.

This last trip, my trusty $10.00 wooden TV tray from Walmart gave up the ghost….it just finally fell apart to years of use, oh believe me – I got more than $10.00 of use out of that thing!

While in Carrollton KY with some free time on my hands, I wandered into THEIR local Walmart to see if I could find one to replace it.  They had them in cherry finish, not oak, and I prefer natural wood to fake stuff, so instead I came out with this:

Studio_April2014 101

New & Improved!  And about $20.00  But I think I’ll use it for other stuff too!

Studio_April2014 102

It fits my gifted pressing board perfectly! And the legs are adjustable to many positions.

I’m also really excited about my iron finds while I was gone.  I’ve now got 3 identical little Universal travel irons – One for home, One for Quilt Villa, and one to travel!  Weeeeee!  I hit the jack-pot!

Let’s get going and finish these border blocks!

I just need enough blocks for 3 more sides, one length is already done – for one long side.  The red border is attached, the string blocks are not yet.

    Hi Bonnie,
I have a couple of questions about your newest beautiful baby quilt. How do you get a block with so many seams to lie so flat? And, how do you sew blocks on so many different machines and get them to fit together so well?
    Thanks for all you do!

  17. Hey Bonnie! Our Guild the Triad Modern Quilters had a yard sale last night. A friend sold me a half made quilt kit in my favorite Happy Camper fabric for only $7!. She had already made the bow ties so I am piecing them together and adding borders from all the fabric that came with it. There is no pattern for layout so I'm making it up as i go along.

  19. Hi Bonnie, I was glad to hear your take on the GF diet. I agree that food that is bad with wheat is just as bad without it, but those of us with Coeliac disease need access to those so we aren't denied all goodies. Since being diagnosed I have found it's easier to avoid the things we choose not to eat rather than those we CAN'T eat. Love Quilt Cam. 11.30 AM in Newcastle Australia :)

  22. Hiya Bonnie! I would very much value an explanation of how to make a large two color HST to use when setting blocks on point. I have become dependent upon the EZ angle for small HST's, but I do not know where to find the formula for the big ones. Thank you so very much for all your wonderful teaching!

  28. Hi Bonnie
It's great to catch Quilt-Cam tonight. I just trimmed 20 scrappy blocks at 4.5" They're crazy patch using the little 5 sided piece in the centre & lots of my strip scraps are only about 1" I sewed these on a Feather Weight while visiting my Mom who will be 96 this month. Two weeks ago I made 83 of them while staying & helping my daughter with her 3 little ones during the Michigan spring break. I'll use the bks in 9 patch & eventually get a single irish chain quilt. The ity bity trimmings go to the local daycare for the little ones to paste & play. Thanks again for all that you do.

  41. Thanks for quilt-cam tonight. I'm working on blocks for my BOM from my quilt shop. This year we get 7 blocks each month. They are 9 patch blocks so not difficult but I got them all cut tonight and all the rows finished for all 7 blocks completed and pressed. Now I just have to join the rows to complete each block and I will be done for this month. I just love quilt-cam as I don't usually work in my sewing room at night, but I do while I listen and watch.

  44. Hi Bonnie! Thanks for QuiltCam tonight - I really enjoy sewing along with you - I am altering my two great nieces dance costumes and binding the inside seams with satin ribbon so that the cut sequins don't scratch them during their big recital. They are ages 7 and 10 and I am hoping that this summer I will have a few sewing sessions with them so they can make some of their own projects :)

Yes, gluten is an issue for more people than actually know it. I, too, was very ill before I finally discovered it was gluten intolerance - it caused so many things to go wrong. I am so glad I finally found out what was causing it all!

The smaller one is set 3x3 and finished 44" square, the other is 46" x 60". #1 quilt will be going to Greenville,Tx to demonstrate binding by machine. Its a TOGA(Treadle On Gathering & Academy). Its fun event with lots of people who use people powered machines. I'm bringing a 1955 Pfaff 60 treadle.

  49. So happy that you will be doing more segments on the Quilt Show. I would love to see you set the 1/4 inch seam using your little sewing machine seam guide. Also would love to see you make flying geese blocks. How about webbing the blocks together. It is such a great idea for keeping everything in the right order when putting the blocks together. Also do a paper pieced block. You were doing one while you were away. I am so happy I will get to see more of you on the Quilt Show.

  50. Hi Bonnie, I am watching your Quilt-Cam for the first time!

Funny that you mentioned Mackinac Island... I just escaped the area - suffered through the Polar Vortex, I did! Gads-zooks! Oui! Back in the Paficic NW until June... about when the ice melts off!

Just sent off a Wedding quilt to get quilted, it's for my son & his bride-to-be who is getting married in a month.

While I'm at 'home', I want to do a Sewing Night with my daughters who want to get started on the next quilt project. Figure that they just need a few new ideas (quilt blocks) and then they can send me pictures when they are all done.

Thank you for your constant inspiration! I've been going back and reading past blog posts... have to take notes because there is a wealth of knowledge and experience. I was in the middle of reading a post about using men shirts and thought "the next time I go to the store, I'm going to buy XXL shirts on sale"... then, the next sentence you said just that!
Thank you for all the sharing that you do for us beginning quilters!

  51. Hi Bonnie! I use the same Walmart tray table as my pressing station! It's the perfect height. I actually have three of those tables. If I'm making something that requires lots of trimming/squaring up, I place a second table on the other side of my sewing table for a trimming station, making a u-shaped work space. The third table I keep in the living room and use when cutting out / prepping hexies while I watch TV. I always enjoy reading your blog.
