Find Yourself on EASY STREET!

Click HERE for Printer Friendly Version!

I am SO excited that it is finally “Mystery Time”!  I look forward to this time so much every year.  It is the one big thing I feel I can to do to thank you for all the friendship and support you have shown to me over the past year.  A way to pay it forward, my way to give something back.

Running a mystery is like pedaling yourself out into the middle of traffic, hoping you will survive!  Will you like this new quilt? I hope so!  Did you ever have that dream where you have had to stand on stage and sing to a huge crowd of people, but in your dream you couldn’t carry a tune to save your life?  If there are oversights or mistakes, I ask you to be patient with me because YOU are my testers!

First off – this mystery will NOT be as intense as the last two years have been.  You can rest a bit easier on that factor alone.  I’ve worked really hard the past couple of years and so have you.  I thought we needed a fun break that will still use up a lot of stash in a very fun and beautiful quilt.  And that is how we find ourselves on EASY STREET!

Easy Street will finish at 84” X 84” BEFORE Borders. It will measure 96" X 96" after borders.  Borders are optional.

I am unable to redesign the quilt to fit any other size you want it to be.  If you want a smaller quilt, simply make half the units for each step that we do.  You can then decide after the reveal how big you want your quilt to be.

Let’s get right to it and get you excited about the colors, shall we?

Remember, you can change the colors to suit your taste.  You can go modern, you can go 1930s, you can go civil war repros.  It will ALL WORK.  What you are going to need is 4 distinct colors and a background.  If you don’t have a stash to work from, a variety of Fat Quarters should be sufficient.  One of the fabrics below is my “constant” and you may want 1 piece of yardage for that.

2012mystery 029

3 yards of Limey Apple greens!

stash 025

This is the color card I picked up from Lowes!  It’s Valspar  6008-8

Photos don’t always turn out accurate color-wise  so I thought it was fun to pull the cards.  My fabrics are in the shades of the center and right hand color – the left hand one is too light.

2012mystery 028

3 1/4 yards Cool Aqua and Turquoise!

stash 029

Valspar Color Card # 5004-10

2012mystery 033

2 yards of Assorted Purples!

stash 026

Valspar Color Card 4003-10

and

stash 028

Valspar Color Card 404-10

I used blue-purples and red-purples but kept to the darker shades of purple.  These will play up against the green and the turquoise, so make sure they are not the light light shades or they may recede.  Stick to the far right side of the color cards!

2012mystery 034

2 yards “Winter Flannel” Gray!
((Yeah, I cut it up before I remembered to take a picture of the yardage..LOL!))

stash 027

Valspar Color Card # 4007-1
It’s even called “Winter Flannel” on the far right of the card…perfect match!

The Gray is one piece of yardage I have had in the stash since 1990-something.  I have a LOT of gray in the stash, only I rarely use it.  This was the time.  This Gray is our “CONSTANT” you will can do this part scrappy if you want, but I found it calming to have this be the one consistent piece in the quilt center.

Backgrounds!

2012mystery 031

4  yards black-on-white prints

There is no Valspar card for the black-on-whites, but I’ve used a ton of these in every pattern I had in my stash.  I’ve been collecting them for years, and the more fun, the cuter, the better.  It’s time to sew some of this whacky stuff up!  I chose prints where there was more WHITE BACKGROUND showing than black busy-ness.  These can tend to be busy so choose designs with lots of airiness to them!

Borders are optional and yardage for those will be given later.

Now for some “OTHER” necessary stuff.

Our first clue will go live Friday, November 23rd.  Clues will be posted every Friday until completion.  Plan on 6 to 8 weeks.  I’m still working on how to break this down in a way that will fit into the holiday routine for everyone.

There are some specialty rulers that have become STANDARD for the way that I work in my quilts, especially mysteries.  We will be using the Easy Angle ruler and the Companion Angle ruler.  If you don’t have access to these, traditional rotary cutting measurements will be given.  It is your job to do what ever you have to do to get the units to measure the size given.  Seam allowance will be very important in this process.

It is your responsibility to PRINT EACH STEP as it is given. A "printer friendly version" link will be at the top of each post.  ((It's at the top of this post too!))

As with previous mysteries, this one will be retired and pulled from the website on June 1st, 2013 to appear in my next book.  I will be unable to provide you missing steps after this point.  That’s the way publishing runs!

The internet is a busy place, and there will be quilters posting pictures of their progress on their blogs---We will be doing a LINKY so that those with blogs can share their progress each Monday following the Friday clue.  I love seeing how everyone is progressing!   If you do not want the mystery “spoiled” for you – don’t go surfing!

My other suggestion is to keep up with each step as best as you can each week.  When the new clue is released stop the previous one wherever you are on it ---and start the next step.  This should keep you familiar with what is going on and you will have SOME of each step ready by the time the mystery is revealed.

And what’s my #1 rule?!

nowhining

You Got It!

I’ll be posting our first clue on Friday, November 23rd!  Now GO SHOP YOUR STASH!

  1. Squeal!! I'm so excited! I love your colors, love the paint chip idea. I have plenty of turquoise, purple and gray but not much apple green-let's go shopping! Your mystery quilt is my treat to myself in the craziness of the holidays every year. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

  3. Thanks so much for the new mystery!! I look forward to these every year, and I HATE mystery quilts!!! I hate them because they always turn out ugly, all except yours that is!!
I usually try and make mine in another color scheme but this time I will probably use the same colors you did.
I've been collecting turquoise and have lots of purple!!
Thanks again, and thanks for posting early so I can have something fun to think about while I'm working today!!!

  5. The morning seemed endless, waiting for America to wake up ! I was doubtful about starting another quilt, but the excitement has reached me, and I am going to go along with you ain't. Thank you Bonnie for your ever perfect instructions and exciting patterns. Carolyn, france

  6. Thanks Bonnie......I am happy to be marching down EASY STREET with you. Now for the REALLY FREAKY PART. The past few days (school was cancelled because of Hurricane Sandy) I have been sorting and cutting fabric in preparation for the mystery reveal this morning. As I was doing so I noticed that I had quite a bit of APPLE/LIME GREENS, PURPLES, AQUAS, AND GRAYS. I don't use these colors very often and I said, "Self, I wonder if I could put these together." I almost swallowed my teeth and fell off my chair when I saw that you had posted THESE VERY COLORS. BTW I do not have false teeth, so I really could not swallow them, but I am feeling very WITCHY about this premonition/coincidence on this Halloween morning. OMG - these color choices are freaking me out. LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM! LOL

  8. Woo Hoo Bonnie! You must have made this for me. I ADORE green and purple and turquoise and purple as color pairs. In this one I get it all! I have been looking forward to this morning - FOR A WEEK!

  10. What fun colors to work with during the winter months! I just have one question: Do we get demerits if we have to go shopping? :) Thank you for your generosity in sharing your patterns and expertise. I can't imagine how much work it must be to keep pulling amazing patterns out of your hat. Know that it is greatly appreciated.

  11. Let the fun begin :) Thanks so much, Bonnie, for a wonderful distraction from the normal holiday busyness. I have been participating in your November mysteries the last four years and found that it keeps me "sane and balanced" during what is otherwise a pretty crazy time of year. You are so generous with your time and your talent. I don't know how you do it all!

  12. This is so exciting! My first Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt! I love the fact that you included the paint cards, it will make it so much easier for me to determine if I have the right colors! This is already so much fun! (ok, I know this post has a lot of exclamation points, but I am excited!!!!!!)

  15. A question: for those of us choosing different color schemes - should one of the constant colors be somewhat neutral (I'm reading your gray as more of a neutral than a color) - or will the design work with 4 different colors? For example, would red, blue, yellow and green work? Looking forward to seeing the mystery unspool - thanks!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I was wondering the same thing. Because although I love the colors Bonnie used, I don't typically buy them or have anywhere to use a quilt made with them. (I am one of those people that actually likes my quilts to work with the colors of the rom they are in, and can't get past it!)

      Delete
    2. I've read her instructions as needing 3 colours(lime, aqua, purple), 1 constant (grey), and 1 background (black on white background). I may have to change up the colours as well, so I am going to pick my constant first, then make sure the 3 colours compliment each other on the same side of the colour wheel (lime, aqua and purple are from the cool side, so if you want a warm quilt I suggest picking 3 from the warm side).

  16. I was nor going to do it cause last years is still in pieces, then Bonnie says it is easier! I was not going to do t cause i didn't have enough fabric.....then Bonnie uses two colours i actually do have. I was just going to read the clues....now i am just going to pull some fabric to see what it looks like! He he he he he he. But I am not going he mystery......ba ha ha ha ha- UFO s + 1

  17. Maybe this will get me out of my sewing related funk! I love the colors. Turquoise is my weakness, and I've been hoping for greens and purples! Now to play with some fabrics to find a substitute for the grey and white/black...the 2 things I do not own. Decisions, decisions. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Can't wait either!! Loving the colours - will need to buy some more lime greens and some more black on white- but that's ok, itwill be fun. YAY thank you Bonnie - and I will finish Orca!!!

  19. I love the comment, " Now go shop your stash!"

  22. The colors are fabulous. I had guessed the green and purple. I was so looking forward to this that my eyes popped open at 4:30. Made myself stay in bed, but gave up at 5. Thanks for this great opportunity to pet and play with fabric and use up that stash. You are a life saver during these hectic holidays. Happy quilting!

  23. How convenient that we have a Shop Hop locally here starting on Friday. I do have large bins for each color of the green, blues and purple. Not so much the grey or white/black. And I have a bin of fabric pulled out to make my sister a quilt with periwinkle, teal, lime green, lavender. Maybe she gets the finished product... Oooh, can I share it? Getting excited. :-)

  24. Wonderful!!! Looks like great fun, DH came in asking what I was doing so early and I told him I was getting my fabrics for my new mystery quilt...he just shook his head and left the room and said have fun. Thanks so much for the fun Bonnie!

  25. You had me at lime green! Green is my current favorite color. I have a whole stack of white on blacks from a project that never materialized. (Oops, pun.) I should be able to get almost everything from my stash except the gray. This will be my first mystery quilt, I've only followed along before but I want to join in the fun this time. I'm off to shop the stash!

  26. Ooooy my colours! Noticed how nice my lime green and turquoise towels looked up against each other this morning and wondered if I could make a quilt with these shades! Wel I'm gonna!

I've only done one other mystery and that was your RRCB ,which I loved BTW.Sadly I missed ORCA BAY because I was still working on RRCB but I've been ready & waiting to start your next one . First I have to get a few necessary things done then I am definitely going stash diving and seeing if I have enough of everything .

I love the fact that you do a mystery quilt. I gain so much from the quilt cams, and the comments when I miss the cam! So for you to give us a FREE QUILT PATTERN is amazing!

  41. OMG! This mystery is made for me. I don't even have to hunt in my stash. Well, maybe for the lime greens and greys. I have a box of turquoise and a box of purples I've been dying to use. I've been collecting white/black prints for some time also. Time to sort my greens to see if I have enough. I've not been a grey person, but I do think I have a large piece that may work. Need to go see.
Thank you Bonnie. I swear you've seen my stash.

  42. Bonnie, you are rocking the Easy Street with these colour choices. So fresh, so breezy...a wonderful contrast to the Snowy Street I am living on (way too early this year). All the best and thanks again for your time, talent and energy.

  44. Hi Bonnie, I would like to join this mystery quilt and it is my first attempt of joining. Thank you for sharing. I will be using the collections that I have...like the others, I am excited too.

  45. I just want to thank you Bonnie for the gift of your time and talent. I am trying to decide what colors to use as I tend to have mostly soft repro colors in my stash but I will figure it out! Doing OB last year was my first mystery and I loved it! It really was the best part of my holiday season. I am hoping for a repeat this year!

    ReplyDelete
  46. This will be my very first Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, but can't wait to go to my "cave" to select fabrics. I have lots of the greens, many aquas, purples, and about 500 yards of a dark grey fabric I got early this year in Arkansas. I also have at least 45 pieces of black and white fabrics, so I think I will be pretty much set to play. Just have to see if all the fabrics will go together nicely. Thanks for the fun, Bonnie.

  47. Oohhh! I am gonna do it this year! I have a great 25% off coupon for this weekend! (Way to new to have a stash near big enough for this!) I am guiddy!

    ReplyDelete
  48. WOW! You blew me away. I have been collecting Aqua, Teal, Turquoise, White & Black for a year. Also lime green, here and there. I kept yelling at myself to Stop with the lime green already. I have a sweater size box of purples. Only thing I don't have is grey. Not a fan of grey but have been looking at it since I don't have any in my stash and it seems to be the color for 2012. That grey you have, I had that in deep green and it was a favorite. I was sorry to see it go. How funny. So off I go to sort my stash and check yardage.

Thanks for the mystery. I am the last one to get a quilt. I have made one for everyone else. This one will be for me.

  49. These colors are gorgeous!!! HOWEVER - I have NONE of them. I was really hoping to 'shop my stash' so does anyone out there have any great ideas for alternative colors? I have lots of navys, reds, blues, greens, more 'traditional' colors - help me out!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well she said any four colors. I don't know why you couldn't use reds, blues/navys, green and another color!

      Delete
    2. Thanks, Sewgreen, I am thinking dark green instead of lime green, navy instead of turquoise, barn red instead of purple, a cinnamon color for my constant and probably light tans for background. I am excited for this!

    3. Hi Audrey,
I don't have Bonnie's colors either, and am debating whether or not to go shopping. The combination you mentioned however, sounds terrific! Either way sounds like a winner. :-)

      Delete
    4. Audrey, that sounds like a lovely combination!

      Delete
    5. Audry I'm planning on using - medium greens, medium blues, dark browns, tan (for my constant) and a light cream to white/tan for my background - your colors sound just wonderful to me.

      Delete
    6. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and thoughts!! This is going to be fun!

      Delete
    7. I just used up all of the lime I had on another project, but I have tons of pink...and I never get to make anything "girlie" so I think I'm going to go with pinks, aquas, purples, and the gray. Also I don't have any black on whites (Just used those up too on a quilt for my nephew), so I'm going to go with just various white and cream neutrals I have in the stash.

      I'm so excited I love Bonnie's Mysteries!

  50. This is going to be so much fun! I have done your last 2 mystery quilts and had such a great time! Off to check my stash!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh the excitement in the air,not due to falling leaves, cool weather or spookey spooks but BONNIE's Easy Street. Have never done a Mystery Quilt so this will be a fun. I don't think I have any of these colors. I know, how could that be. I will shop till I drop and enjoy every min. of it. Thanks for this opp. to not know it all before I start. haha You are amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  52. This is going to be so cool!

I tried to do roll roll cotton ball, but my blocks didn't end up the right size. So I am going to try again!

Now to pick out fabrics! I think I will be using a red, because I told a friend that I didn't have many red fabrics (as she was trying to destash) and she sent me a priority box full of them! We shall see what other colors I choose to add. I shall go "stash shopping" tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  53. What delicious colors!

But, boy, it's a long time until November 23....(that's an observation, not a whine .)

  54. This will be my fist mystery with you! I have the last 3 years saved off but still have not done them. I plan to work along this year with everyone else! Thanks so much for doing this. I can't wait to see how it turns out..... especially since I am going to use different colors I think.

  55. I only have bits of gray in stash, but I dyed a nice cotton sheet (from the mission store) gray for dd's Halloween costume that she'll be done with tonight! COOL!

  57. yahoo its here and what a terrific colour palette to work with. It will be fun digging in the stash to find what is needed. I hope I don't have to 'shop' for any!!! :) Looking forward to the first clue and working on Easy Street.

  58. can't wait to unpack my fabric and find these colors! What a happy quilt this will be. Thanks you, Bonnie, for doing everything that you do for all of us.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Love the colors - but I don't have much of them, and I've promised myself not to buy any more fabric until I've used up what I have. What's a girl to do? I guess it wouldn't be the first promise I've broken.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I wasn't going to do this mystery due to time constraints of customer quilts. But those colors just jumped at me, along with the idea that this one will be easier. I think I'll take Bonnie's suggestion and make half of each unit -it won't be so overwhelming and I won't feel so guilty about working on my own stuff. Plus I'll get to go shopping - I have NONE of those colors - except some of the black on white. That definitely makes me want to play!!! Sue K

  61. Bonnie, thank you so much for all you do to promote quilting.

I've been debating about whether or not to make this quilt because I have so many projects already in progress. Then I saw the name. Easy Street is a song from the musical "Annie." My son and three of my grandchildren were in a community theater production of "Annie" in September. It's a sign that I'm meant to do this quilt! However, I'm with Audrey in that I have almost none of these colors so mine will definitely be some other colors.

    1. Every single time I come back here to check in and see what's new, I think of that song! Wish I could have seen the play! Can't wait to start!

  63. I love your colors! Before each mystery I always say to myself that I'm going to choose my own colors this time, but then I always fall in love with yours! I guess I will have to shop my stash and see what I've got because lime green and teal are two things I tend not to stock pile. But I love the way they go with the purple!

Does anyone know what size EASY ANGLE and COMPANION ANGLE ruler I should buy? I went to order them this morning, but they have different sizes.

    1. My Easy Angle goes to 6 1/2" and my Companion Angle to 5 1/2" and I've never run into anything that it wouldn't work for. Unless you make quilts with very large pieces I would suppose these would work for you.

  67. Wow... These colors will be wonderful to work with over our winter! I am glad we have a couple weeks to pull colors. Originally i thought i'd use repro & civil war fabrics, but now i am reconsidering. I have turquoises, and limey greens; some purples, a few black on white shirtings... But no gray. Well, i might have some French General! I really, really want to shop from stash; sometimes limitations (i.e. not shopping) fuel creativity. Thanks Bonnie! I'm going over to your yahoo group to catch their buzz! B

  68. Thank you, Bonnie!!!! I absolutely LOVE the colors! And thanks again for keeping the Linky thing going this year. Can't wait to get started on this one! 1. Ask your quilty friends for help-I am sure they have some "scraps" they would love to clean out and throw your way! Most of my current projects are from the back table at guild where others put their "clean outs" and I happily bring home and trim down to "fabric food chain" components!

  69. Gorgeous colors you have picked Bonnie...this is my second mystery and Orca Bay was a lot of cutting and sewing but I love the quilt. Looking forward to the 23rd!

  70. As usual, I have TWO possible color schemes in mind for the mystery! I have been wanting a brown and pink quilt, so that one would be pink/lime green/aqua/brown/creamy neutrals and is inspired by a piece of floral yardage in my stash. The other is inspired by another large floral I've been saving for something great and is lime/aqua/gold/brown/slightly darker neutrals.

What to do, what to do?

I love love love Bonnie's colors but the gray and purple just aren't me - I'm all about the aqua and lime, though. So a few tweaks and I have two contenders. The plus is that this will come entirely from stash - NO SHOPPING ALLOWED! I'm being very firm with myself.

So which do I use? Any votes? I'll post photos on my blog this morning.

  71. This will be my first Bonnie mystery. I watched last year while everyone played along with Orca Bay so this will be fun. I absolutely love the colors. I will be stash shopping after work today while answering the door I'm sure with trick or treaters. Thanks Bonnie!!!

  72. OOOOOOOOOOO!! Love the colours, Bonnie!! Just the colours I am looking for in my new home colour scheme. I will keep each week's clues in a folder and enjoy watching everyone else's progress, as I am in the middle of building works until February.
Thanks in advance for all the effort you always put into everything you do and share. You are paid so far forward, you need never worry! Sandra in the UK

  74. Whoot whoot..best news upon awakening! The name Easy Street makes it sound so doable for first timers too! Something tells me there is a trip to Lowes coming on! Now..do I have any lime fabric?

  75. Gorgeous colors Bonnie! Bright and happy - exactly as they should be on Easy Street :*D

  76. Okay, so when I saw these colors, I thought they were great. BUT I knew I wouldn't have them in my stash. Spent over an hour down there pulling things. Nothing close to the apple green. One or two pieces of turquoise, and one piece of purple. Very little white w/black shirtings, and one grey squiggle yardage.

SO I am punting and going with different colors. Red instead of purple? Navy blue instead of turquoise? Darker green or gold instead of apple green? White w/navy blue shirtings? Brown/cream stars instead of the grey?

Any thoughts? Wondering which two should be the 3+ yards. I have more reds and blues than greens or yellows. And will the brown/cream star work? Maybe only if I keep the green and skip the gold? Can we post our fabric selections somewhere for Bonnie or others to check and suggest alterations? On the Yahoo site?

    Help! Thanks..............

  77. So last year I didn't keep up with the steps a little each week and never finished...so this year my goal is to doo some of every step no matter what and hopefully finish by the end of the 6-8 weeks! I ove mystery quilts!!! I think I have to do some scrap shopping on ebay because I don't have hardly any of these colors...countdown to 11/23!!

  78. Can someone please tell me what brand or where to get the two rulers mentioned for cutting this quilt?

    Thanks Mary

    1. Got mine at JoAnn's years ago with discount coupons! Also, your LQS could order if they don't have in stock. Then, there are on line options.

      Delete
    2. nancysnotions.com or fatquartershop.com or amazon.com are all good online choices and you can always Google either ruler and several additional choices usually come up. The rulers are great and I've used mine for several quilting projects.

      Have FUN!

  81. Hi There!

Last year was my first Mystery Quilt. Bonnie asked us to use up our strips and crumbs and whatever small piece of fabric that we had.

This time around, she doesn't mention minimum or maximum width or size of fabrics. *scratching my head*

Do I need to pull out fat quarters, looking for the colors I will be using, or do I go into my strip bins and look for these colors?

Anyone there know the answer or Bonnie.... could you email me privately, if necessary, at robich@rogers.com? I know you're super busy and if you don't have the time, I understand. *s*

    Tks everyone!

    1. I supposed that when she said "3 yards" she meant any group of fabrics that added up to the equivalent of 3 yards of fabrics, be it one piece or thirty pieces. If using a lot of strips, scraps or FQs I would figure on a little more because there would be more waste in small unusable scraps. I would include strips in the selections because you can always recut them narrower if needed. I'm betting, Bonnie being Bonnie, that your 2" and 2 1/2" strips would be useful.

When I'm making a scrappy mystery I pull a big pile of each color and start working. As the mystery progresses if I need more of a certain color, red for instance like in Orca Bay, I go back to my stash and pull out more. When you finally lay out the blocks to join them you can make sure that all the different fabrics are evenly distributed throughout the quilt. I never worry about the specified quantity at the beginning past making sure I have a BIG pile of scraps and FQs to start. Using smaller pieces, it's hard to estimate the total yardage anyway.

  82. I *love* those colors. I think I'll have to play along - if only for the colors!! Get a start right after Thanksgiving and, if necessary, catch-up over the end-of-year holidays. Wheeee!

  83. Can you give specifics on the rulers? I would love to join in!

  84. I am sooo excited Bonnie! Thank you so much for all the fun you so generously share with us quilters! I can admit right away that I have all these requirements in my stash and won't even need to dig too deep! I have the rulers and a sharp new blade....can't wait!
In the meantime, I will finish up RRCB and Orca Bay!!!

  90. Bonnie I love the color choices!!!!! They are right up my alley and over flowing in my stash. :) The only color I do not have a lot of is gray and I am sure I can fine the perfect one at my favorite LQS.
I have printer out the mysteries from past years but never gotten started. This year I plan to sew along with you. I think I need to schedule time on my calendar, and block out Mystery sewing time.

  92. My first thought was to use a bunch of feed sack material I bought at an auction, but I just am not "feeling" it with them, so my second thought is from a stack of fabric (which are mostly pastels but a gorgeous floral that could be the border) a relative gave me. She is suffering from Crohn's disease and I am not sure how much longer she will be with us. Or maybe with an Amish look. Decisions, decisions....I may have to make 2 at the same time! I LOVE a good mystery.....especially Bonnie's mysteries!!

I have a ton of civil war shirtings, so will either do civil war (shirtings for B&W), OR
30's. At least, for now that is the plan. :) Going to use from my stash.

  98. I am hoping you will let us know tonight what the largest and smallest pieces will be cut from the different fabrics. Wanting to get rid of some scraps here and there. And I am worried that my fabric for the grey may be too large of a print.

  99. Bonnie you are marvellous. I have never done a mystery quilt before. I love the colours you have chosen, but have very little of them in my stash. I am going to shop my stash tomorrow after work and see what colour combinations I can come up with. I want to keep this one for me. Thankyou Bonnie, you made me realise that scrap quilts are great and take the stress out of choosing colours that co ordinate. X

  104. I was thinking of using Mardi Gras colors and calling mine "The Big Easy Street"! This just might be my year to do the Mystery. I work at a corporate job with a long commute so I never had time to participate, but I've saved up enough vacation to have every Friday between Thanksgiving and New Years off! That might just have to be "Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt Friday"!!! Spend it sewing ALL DAY!!!

  106. Well Bonnie, I'm going to do the mystery again this year - #2 for me - and too tell the truth I'm chompin at the bit to get started - decided this year that I'm going to just stick with my stash and not purchase anything else - scrappy all the way!!!!! - my colors - medium greens, medium blues, dark browns, tan (for my constant) and a light cream to white/tan for my background - can't wait to see what happens to this mixture!!!!! This should look great on my bed this new year! (old one already has so much lovin that she's startin to show her petticoats!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  107. My first time joining in on your mystery quilt, and I am so excited to get started!! Will someone please confirm for me (or not), that the gray constant is one gray (or other neutral) fabric that is consistent throughout the blocks. In other words, not a mixture of grays in the same tone/shade/value. Thanks!

    1. from what I read Bonnie was using just one gray - but said that you could do the same or make it "scrapy"

    2. Oops! Yes, I just reread the post, and Bonnie wrote that the grays can be scrappy. Thanks again!

      Delete
  108. For those that don't have your colors can you also describe in terms of value? It seems the green and blues are medium, purple is dark, gray and white are neutrals with one medium the other light.

    1. I chose dark & medium-dark values in each of the three color fabrics (saturated jewel tones in emerald green, royal blue, and magenta). Most of these fabrics are in the cool range, but I'm also throwing in some warmer choices, to liven things up a bit :-)

My constant fabric is a medium-value, warm tan in a textured print. It contrasts well with my three darker colors, and also with my background choices...

I'm using scrappy, very light pastels for my background mix. Assorted soft tints of "almost white": lavender, pink, blues, greens, and yellow. No busy backgrounds in my mix, just quiet pastels.

Here is a photo of my choices, from my Flickr page:

      We'll see how it works

  109. I am thrilled with the colours! At first I was going to change them up so I could make it for my daughter, but I think these colours will work for her (and if she doesn't like it, I get to keep it!) The only thing I have to shop for is the grey, and I might get yardage for that - decisions, decisions!

Thanks again for all you do, Bonnie!

  110. oh my goodness, i am starting a new mystery quilt at a local shop in a few days and saw this and wished i had seen it first. I used to live on Easy Street, many years ago as a child. It was only a little hill about 1/2 mile long contaning a few homes, a motel, a school, the town hall and a little store. Quaint. I hope my quilt will be too, thanks for this, peg in ny

  111. Aaaah ! My stash is packed for renovations. New kitchen and sewing nook. If I can't get my stash back out in time I just might have to buy all new fabric! Tragedy!!! Rainy in Oz

  112. I'm in - just got all the batiks in these/Bonnie's colors pulled and/or ordered and ready to go. Now, if I could just figure out a way/time to finish Orca Bay! In my defense, Orca Bay is completely pieced but needs the blocks sewn together w/borders. Until my quilting studio w/design wall can get finished I have NO place to assemble this quilt to do it justice and after all the time I spent piecing, no short-cutting it now. Oh well, maybe I'll finish both of these up in the New Year, surely my studio that was started in FEBRUARY, 2012, will finally be finished! Sorry Bonnie, I forgot Rule #1 - NO WHINING!

Thanks Bonnie for ALL the motivation, I need it - excited and ready to go ;-)

  115. I'm feeling like there's something wrong with me because I don't have these colors lol, but the best part of Bonnie's mysteries is that they push me to do something different. Great timing on releasing the requirements! I live in the Houston area and am going to the International Quilt festival tomorrow, so I can focus in on these lovely colors. It's always nice to go there with a purpose in mind because it can be overwhelming otherwise. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  116. I agree with Laura. I don't have much in those colors, but as I look at your piles, I really like the combination. The funny part is that I may have some of the colors packed away. I had to pack up some of my sewing room in order to show the house. It has just sold, and we will be moving mid to late spring. All that means is that I can go shopping again and add to my stash:) The mystery quilt sounds like fun and I am looking forward to it.

  119. Just the excuse I needed to go shopping. I don't keep much of a stash, but it was SO much fun to go pick out my stash for this mystery. I had a lot of folks either ask what my plan was-answer
"I don't know, it is a mystery(quilt)" and many who LOVED "my" color choices. So Bonnie I pass the compliments on to you.

  121. I'm in for this one. I've never done a mystery before and I'm doing this all from my stash. I don't care for the black/white fabric. Can you suggest an alternative. I have only one b/w fat quarter in my stash and I'm not buying any fabric for some time to come.I'm auditioning 2 different colorways: orange, yellow, green and purple/lavender. The constant will be a soft green. The other starts with a navy blue and using greens, reds, yellows and lighter blues with the same soft green as the constant. Any suggestions?

  122. love a mystery quilt but this (picking colors) is the hardest. I found a beautiful tangerine color and a magenta but the third color? Help! I've stared and stared at a color wheel and can't figure out which way to go. Any ideas?
